Peninsulares- People who were birthed in the mainland of Spain, but sailed and settled in the Americas, where known as Peninsulares. These people where at the top of the food chain, or pyramid if you will. Peninsular's typically held the most prestigious and important government positions, and had ownership of large portions of land. The job for peninsulares, was to keep the many colonies of the New World under Spanish control.
Creoles- People who were of European blood ,but where birthed in the Americas were known as Creoles. Although Creole people seemed to also be high up in class as the peninsulares, creoles were discriminated against due to them not being birthed in the mainland, and not allowed to hold important or high positions in either government or religious fields.
Mulattoes- People who were of both European and African blood. Since many of the Peninsulares or Spanish settlers in the Americas were men, it was common for peninsulares to form relationships with the Africans slaves of which they owned. The kids that the peninsulares and slaves had, were still considered slaves, due to them having
Mestizo- People who were of both European and Native blood where known as Mestizos. Much like with Mulattoes, Mestizo's were the offspring of a Peninsular and a Native woman. Since the kids were also of Native blood, they did not have the power to obtain high class jobs, therefore men of the Mestizo typically became a servant or artesian. Some Mestizo's became mayordomos. A mayordomo's job was to overlook the Native slaves, as the Mestizo's were far superior. The mayordomo also settled differences that were held between any slave and slave owner.
Native Americans and Slaves- The Natives and slaves of New Spain were located at the very bottom of the social pyramid. The Europeans captured slaves from Africa in order to tend to farmlands and fields. The natives were seen as being too weak frail, and scarce to do such jobs, as many natives died because they were not used to such a workload, and many were killed during the conquest.
