With Spain having conquered newly found land thousands of miles away from the mainland, King Charles V needed to be able to maintain order and keep this new land under the Spanish flag. Therefore King Charles assigned viceroys to colonies of New Spain. The viceroys were the highest power in New Spain, but could be taken out power by powerful colonial officials by simply taken the issue at hand to the King. The viceroys had king-like rule over his people and was in charge of protecting the natives, administering law and order, Christian conversion of natives, alongside having many other important tasks. Throughout the 16th ans 17th centuries, New Spain only had 2 viceroys, one located in Lima,Peru, and one in Mexico City,Mexico. This was until 2 more viceroys were introduced in 18th century, one of New Granada(1717), and one of the Rio De la Plata(1776).
